James Hilton Turvey was baptised on 18 September 1832, in East Retford, Nottinghamshire, the son of John Hilton and Mary Ann Turvey.[1]
He was living with his parents in East Retford in 1841.[2]
He married Mary Bertody Marland on 24 Dec 1859 in Holy Trinity, Southport, Lancashire, England.[3]
They had one child, James Turvey in 1860. His marriage to Mary Bertody Marland ended 2 Nov 1863 due to her death.
He then married a second time to Ann Whittingham on 24 Oct 1864 in Chester St Bridget, Cheshire, England.
He was living in Lathom St James, Lancashire in 1871 working as a Professor of Music and living with wife Ann (25, born Chester) and children James H (5), Fanny (4), Charles H (2), Edith A (1). [4]
Anne died in 1871 and he married 22-year old Maude Janvrin Vincent, from St Lawrence, Channel Islands, on 8 February 1872 in Ladbroke, Warwickshire. The had three children Vincent Newton (1873), Maude Christine (1875) and Amy Blanche Vincent (1877). He lived at 7 Leicester Street at this time. His brother Thomas died in 1878.[5]
Described by this time as a "gentleman", he was appointed Lieutenant of the 54th Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corp in 1871[6] and was promoted to Captain-Comandant in 1875.[7] He stood for election to the Southport Council in 1874 and 1875 for the Conservative Party.[5] He had became a leading man of the town by then, leading the procession that reopened the baths in 1881.[5]
He was living with his wife Maude and four children in Southport in 1881, listed as a "music seller".[8]
James left to Australia May 1881 for a series of business trips, returning in October to find his wife was pregnant with another man's baby. John Frederick was born 26 June 1882, his father being Albert Bernard Seymour, a brewer from her native Jersey. James sued for divorce, but he died on 7 January 1883 before the divorce had been finalised.[9]
