Adelheid was the daughter of Albrecht I 'der Bär' (the Bear)von Ballenstedt, Herzog von Sachsen (Duke of Saxony) and Markgraf von Brandenburg (Margrave of Brandenburg), and his wife Sophie von Winzenburg. There is no clear indication of her birth date, but she was probably one of their younger children[1] and one source gives circa 1135[2] as an approximate date. The original date on this record of about 1146[3], seems possibly too late.
She became a nun in Kloster Lamspringe and probably died there and was definitely buried there, perhaps in late 1161 or early 1162[4]. A charter dated 12 June 1162 attests to her father donating property in memory of Adelheid and that she was buried in Lamspringe.[5]
