3 JUL 1861, John McMurray Uhls and his younger

brother, Jacob Marshall Uhls, journey to the State Capitol in Nashville to enlist in state service. The 24th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry was organized at that time with 11 companies, "A" - "L," and was transfered to the service of the Confederate States of America on 24 AUG 1861 at Camp Trousdale, near Hartzville, Tennessee. John McMurray Uhls was elected Captain of Company "C. (Supposedly he won the rank of Captain by running a foot race.) He was enlisted by G. H. Smith, Lt. CSA. Company "C" was made up of volunteers from the southern part of Macon County, where sympathy for the South surely ran high. John's brother, Jacob, enlisted as a private in Company "C" as did many other neighbors, including Abraham B. Ellis, who would marry their sister, Massa Uhls after the war.
