Biography

Birth

Chester James Underwood was born on the 24th of January 1859 in Wisconsin. He was the second to youngest of nine children born to Levi Underwood (1815-1897) of New York and Jane Lynn (Nelson) Underwood (1820-1880) of Ohio. The 1860, 1870, & 1880 census records state that they were farmers in Geneva, Wisconsin during this time period.^[1][2][3]

Marriage

Chester married Ida May (Nelson) Underwood (1865-aft.1940) on the 18th of December 1884. He graduated from the Chicago College of Dental Surgery on the 28th of March 1887^[4] He also served as President of the Northern Illinois Dental Society during his career in Denistry.^[5] The 1900, 1910, & 1920 census records state that they lived in Elgin, Illinois, where they raised their two children.^[6][7][8]

Death

Chester passed away on the 29th of December 1927 in Elgin, Illinois at the age of sixty-eight. ^[10]

Research Note

Wisconsin kept spotty birth records between 1850 -1870. Plus the great Chicago fire of 1890 destroyed many Illinois records. More digging will be required of newspapers and state records to find proof of birth and the wedding, however census records and Lucien Underwoods book Underwood Families of America fill many of the gaps.
