Biography

Mary Matilda Hagell was born in 1828 in Bermondsey, Surrey, England to John Hagell and Mary Elizabeth (Booth) Hagell - she was christened on 12 Oct 1828 at Saint Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey.^[1]

In 1841 Mary Hagele (age 12) lived at Kent Road Claremont Place in Camberwell, Surrey with her father John (30-34), mother Mary (30-34), and four siblings: Sarah (9), Joseph (6), Caroline (4), and Sophia (0).^[2]

Unable to locate Mary on the 1851 census - her family lived at Claremont Place in Camberwell: father John (43, Tailor), mother Mary Elizabeth (40), and six siblings: Joseph (16, Tailor's Apprentice), Sophia (10, Scholar), William John (8, Scholar), George (6, Scholar), Elizabeth (2), and Emma (0).^[3]

Mary Matilda Hagell married Charles Wood in 1858. The marriage was registered in Islington in the third quarter of the year.^[4]

Charles was a widower with children from his previous marriage, including Emily (Wood) Overy (c1853-).

In 1861 Mary M Wood (age 32) lived at Charles Street in Islington with her husband Charles (48, Cab Driver), four stepchildren: Harriet (14, House Maid), Charles (12, Errand Boy), Sarah F (11, Scholar), and Emily (9, Scholar), and daughter Mary (1).^[5]

In 1871 Mary Wood (age 42) lived in London with her husband Chas (57, Cabman), stepdaughter Sarah (21), and three daughters: Mary (11, Scholar), Alice (3, Scholar), and Caroline (0).^[6] Their other daughter, Elizabeth (8), was staying with her grandparents John & Mary E Hazell [Hagell] in Camberwell.

In 1881 Mary M Wood (age 52) lived at Liverpool Rd in Islington with her husband Charles (68, Cab Driver), daughter Alice S (13, Artificial Florist), and two lodgers: Leopold Silberberg (50, Professor of Music) and Helen Grugeon (61, Independent).^[7]

Mary's husband passed away in 1886.

In 1891 Mary M Wood (age 62, House Keeper) lived at Gibson Square in Islington with her daughter Alice S (23, Florist).^[8]

Mary Matilda Wood passed away in 1897, aged 68 years. Her death was registered in Shoreditch, London in the first quarter of the year.^[9]
