Biography

Son of Carlin or Carl Utterback and Elizabeth Melanie Brouillette.

Benjamin was their eldest child. He was age 11 when he was enumerated in the 1900 Census for Vincennes, Knox, Indiana.[1]

In 1910 Benjamin was age 20. The 1910 Census gives his birthplace as Illinois. The family was in San Patricio County, Texas. Benjamin was with his parents and his sisters Esther, Katherine and Ruth.[2]

When he registered for the World War I draft from Nueces County, Texas, Benjamin gave his birthplace as Fairfield County, Illinois.[3]

He was inducted at Corpus Christi, Texas on 14 June 1918. He served in the Students Army Training Corps at Texas A & M, College Station, Texas.[4]

He was age 30 and single in 1920; the 1920 Census gives his birthplace as Indiana.[5]

He applied for a U. S. Passport 18 January 1921 from Nueces County, Texas. He gave his birthplace as Fairfield, Illinois. This was his first passport. The purpose was for travel into Mexico to inspect lands.[6]

Benjamin married Maria Dominga Valenciaga 6 Feb 1923 in Gonzales, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She was the daughter of Pedro Maria Valenciaga and Romana Araquistain de Valenciaga. Benjamin was the son of Carlos del Appelido (meaning Carlos of the same surname) and Ilsbel B. del Utterback.[7]

They were the parents of Benjamin Carlos Pedro Utterback Valenciaga, born 5 April 1925 in Aldama, Tamaulipas, Mexico.[8] Benjamin died in Detroit, Michigan in 1952.[9]

They were the parents of Dan Utterback, born 20 July 1926 in Escondida, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico and baptized 29 June 1930 at Dulce Nombre de Jesús, Xicoténcatl, Tamaulipas, México.[10]Daniel died in 1971 at Lackland Air Force Base (Wilford Hall USAF Hospital).[11]

They were the parents of Esther Utterback Valenciaga, b 12 Nov 1927 in Gonzales, Tamaulipas, Mexico.[12]

They were the parents of Carlos Utterback Valenciaga, born 19 June 1929 in Aldama, Tamaulipas, Mexico.[13] Carlos died at age 7 in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico.[14]

The family was included in the Mexican National Census of 1930. They were living in Magiscatzin, Manuel, Tamaulipas. Benj. Utterback was age 41, married by both civil and church registration, occupation "cempleado," born in Illinois, nationality "this jurisdiction?" native language English. His wife Maria Valenciaga de Utterback was age 31, married by both civil and church registration, born in Viscaya, Espana, nationality "this jurisdiction." Daughter Maria Utterback was age 7, born in Tamaulipas. Son Benj. Utterback was age 5, born in Tamaulipas. Son Daniel Utterback was age 3, born in Tamaulipas. Daughter Esther Utterback was age 2, born in Tamaulipas. Son Carlos Utterback was age 1, born in Tamaulipas.[15]

Other children: Ramona (Gilberto) Villareal, Robert Utterback, Mary (Severo) Rodriguez, Pedro Utterback, Carlos Utterback, Jane (Alphonso) Belloc, Eva Utterback and Eduardo Utterback.

In 1940 Ben Utterback was age 50, and operating a service station in Aransas Pass, San Patricio, Texas. No family was with him. He had been living in Mexico in 1935.[16]

He was a resident of Laredo, Texas.[17]

He was a motor repair mechanic and a World War I veteran. He died of emphysema.[18]
