Biography

Evelyn Emma Utterback was born 5 May 1899 in Quinnemont, Fayette Co., West Virginia, USA to Oliver Perry Utterback to Emma Tilden Thomas. [1] [2] She married Kyle Lawrence Ballengee in 1925 in Summers Co., West Virginia. [3]

Evelyn and Kyle had one daughter:

  1. Emma Belle Ballengee, b. 12 May 1932, [2] d. 31 Oct 2011; [4] m. Ira Lee Wood Sr.

Although a couple of records exist giving Evelyn's place of birth as Clayton, Summers Co., West Virginia, [5] [6] The Utterback Book, [2] her Find A Grave memorial, [7] and other birth [1] and baptismal records [8] list it as Quinnemont in Fayette Co., West Virginia. This profile uses this latter birth place.

EVELYN U. BALLENGEE
Mrs. Evelyn Utterback Ballengee, 95, of Clayton, died Fri. Feb. 10, 1995, at the home of her daughter, Emma Belle Ballengee Wood, following a long illness.
Born May 5, 1899, at Quinnimont, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Perry and Emma Thomas Utterback.
Mrs. Ballengee was an 89-year resident of Clayton and a former Summers County Elementary School teacher and principal of Clayton Elementary.
She was a homemaker and was educated at Concord and Alderson-Broaddus Colleges.
She was the oldest member of the Clayton Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, and was historian for Clayton-Griffith Creek History.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle L. Ballengee and four brothers, Leo, James, Merlin and George Utterback.
Survivors include a daughter, Emma Belle Ballengee Wood of Clayton; three grandsons. Dr. Don C. Wood and his wife, Louise, of Fort Spring, Dell L. Wood and wife Nancy of Fort Spring, Ira Lee Wood of Durham, NC; three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah and Brennan, and four sisters-in-law, Pearl Utterback Robertson of St. Albans, Louise Utterback of Alderson, Margaret Ballengee of Charleston and Daisy Ballengee of Rand.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sun. Feb. 12 at Clayton Baptist Church with Revs. J.D. Fox, Mark Farren and Roger Persinger officiating. Burial followed in the Clayton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Paul Canterbury, Chester Thompson, Jamie Utterback, Jeff Utterback, Kenny Lowe, Kermit Burdette, Timothy Canterbury, and Justin Persinger.
In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Clayton Baptist Church, c/o Judy Utterback Boone, HC 73 Box 104, Alderson, WV 24910.
