Biography
George came to Western Australia as a prisoner on the Pyrenees, arriving on 30 April 1853. He left a wife and three children in England.[1]
He married Catherine Davitt on 15 January 1855 in Perth.[2] They had four children to 1860.
George was a general dealer, blacksmith and farmer at Perth in the 1860s and was later licensee of the "King Edward Hotel".[3]
He moved to Williams River having deserted his wife and entered into an unmarried relationship with Ellen O'Shaughnessey, who was thirty odd years his junior. Ellen died in 1884.
He employed 64 Ticket of Leave men on occasions 1855-1881, including 13 blacksmiths, 3 charcoal burners, a wheelwright, a carpenter, a splitter, a teamster and a well-sinker.[3]
