Biography

Adrian (Adreyaen, Adrin, Adriaan) Gerrit Van Houten was born and christened 26 November 1749 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Paramus, Bergen, New Jersey, the son of Gerrit Pieterse Van Houten and Jannetje Kip. His siblings were: Peter, Isack, Jacob, Helmich, Anna, Johannes, Claartje, Claertye, Gerrit, Jannetje and Sarah.

Adrian married Jannetje Roelof Romeyn in about 1772 in New Jersey. Their children were:

  • Lydia Adrian Van Houten (Stewart) - 1778-1813
  • Johannes Adrian Van Houten - 1784-1880
  • Rachel Adrian Van Houten (Dodd) - 1786-1837
  • Ralph Van Houten - 1786-1859
  • Peter Adrian Van Houten - 1789-1846
  • Thomas Van Houten - b. 1790
  • Elizabeth Adrian Van Houten (Jacobus) - 1792-1871
  • Isaac Adrian Van Houten - 1795-1865

Adrian died on 30 December 1836 in Urbana, Steuben, New York at the age of 87. He is buried in the Jacobus Cemetery in Urbana, New York, per a transcription of the cemetery by a PHGS Member Paul Giometti.
