Biography

Leendert Marinus was born in 1888. He was the son of Marinus van der Sluijs and Jantje Teubina Schuur Entingh. In 1919, he lived in Groningen. He worked as a schoolteacher. In 1942, he was appointed head of a primary school. In 1947, he was dismissed from his position under the Purge Decree of 1945 (Zuiveringsbesluit 1945) with lapse of all rights. This meant he had been found to have either shown "unfaithfulness to the Queen", had displayed a "National Socialist state of mind" through his conduct or statements, shown not to be trusted to help in the reconstruction of the country, or didn't object to the German occupation. His wife Guurtje Kluft successfully divorced him in 1948. He passed away in 1956.

"Artikel 2. (1). Transl. "Article 2. (1). The persons referred to in Article 1 may be dismissed if they: 1. have shown unfaithfulness to the cause of Our Kingdom or to Us, or 2. have demonstrated a National Socialist state of mind through conduct or statements, or 3. adopted an attitude before or during the occupation, which gives a reasonable reason for the expectation that they are not the faithful ones will cooperate in restoring the fatherland, or 4. have been seriously deficient in any other way in exercising the correct attitude in relation to the occupation."

"The Zuivering-Decree of 1945. The Zuivering Decree of August 2, 1945 (Zuiverings Besluit 1945) determined the rules for the operation of the Purge Boards for government employees. This decree was the successor of an earlier, unsatisfactory decree, published in 1944. This 1945 decree applied to all government workers, including ... the teachers and professors of the public schools and state universities ... In addition, the teachers and professors of the private - although always state-financed - denominational schools and universities ... Punitive action was to be taken against those who had (1) shown themselves unfaithful to the 'Kingdom or the Queen'; or (2) had shown a National Socialist state of mind by their conduct or utterances; or (3) had conducted themselves in such a way that one could reasonably expect that they would not faithfully cooperate with the reconstruction of the nation; or (4) had in any way seriously failed to assume the proper attitude in connection with the occupation. ... Whenever a government employee was found guilty of one of the above mentioned misdemeanors, he could be dismissed - with or without loss of pension rights. Furthermore, less severe penalties could be imposed, such as demotion, temporary or permanent exclusion from promotion, oral or written reprimand, and transfer to less desirable locations. In addition, salary could to completely or partly withheld for a period. Dismissal usually took place in two phases. During the first phase, immediately after the Liberation, a suspect was temporarily suspended by the M.G. or the delegate of a Cabinet Minister - with or without salary, depending on the seriousness and degree of certainty of accusations. The final notice of dismissal followed after thorough consideration by the respective Ministry. The Zuivering-Decree of 1945 did not actually create Purge Boards for government employees. The Ministers themselves could determine how to conduct the purge in their departments."
