Biography

John was born about 1833. He was the son of Benjamin Vankoughnet and Mary Vallier. He lived with his parents and siblings in Loughborough, Frontenac, Canada West in 1851.^[1]

John married Mary Bell about 1858.^{[citation needed]} They had 13 children. They lived in Parry Sound, Ontario in 1871^[2] and in McDougall, Parry Sound, Ontario in 1881.^[3] They lived in Foley, Conger and Cowper, Muskoka and Parry Sound, Ontario in 1891.^[4] They were still in Muskoka and Parry Sound in 1901.^[5]

John lived with his son, Benjamin, in Parry Sound in 1911,^[6] while Mary lived with their son, Samuel, and was recorded as a widow.^[7]

Mary passed away in 1912. John passed away in 1915.^[8]

Research

• FamilySearch suggests a second wife, Bella, basing this on the 1901 census, but it seems likely this was a nickname based on Mary’s maiden name of Bell, although they were living separately in 1911.
