James P. Vaux was born on January 8, 1847 in Aurora, Erie, New York, United States, son of Samuel Vaux (<1816–1880) and Mary Ann Underhill (1815–1882).
James died on December 29, 1902 in Aurora, aged 55.

Note: In the 1880 U.S. census for Kansas, the James Vaux family resided in
Grant township, Jewell County, Kansas. The family included James Vaux (age 30, born NY), wife Alice (age 24, born OH), and son Bertrand (age 1, born KS). The complete census record can be found in Volume 8, ED 126, sheet 9, line 12 of the 1880 US census for Kansas (LDS Microfilm 1,254,383, page 403A).
