John Veit was a POW during the United States Civil War.

John was born March 8,1838 in Horrheim Germany the son of John Michael Veit and Margaret Knodel. He left Germany on the Hansa and Deutschland and arrived in New York City on 18 May 1868. He married Helen (Stafford ) Veit she was the daughter of Nathan and Electra Stafford. John's Occupation was as a famer. He also served in the Civil War as a Private with the 145th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry leaving as a Corporal he enlisted in 1862 and was discharged in 1865. John passed away from Chronic Nephritis on July 12, 1922 He was buried at Dunn Valley Cemetery on July 16, 1922.

Box Erie, was born in Germany March 8, 1838, and is the son of John M. and Margaret (Knodle) Veit, who settled in McKean Township in 1840. He was married, Nov. 19, 1865 to Helen, daughter of Nathan Stafford, who settled in what is now Summit Township in 1823. The issue of this marriage was 3 children - Della, Travers any Roy. The Staffords were among the early settlers of McKean and Summit Townships: they were enterprising citizens, and did much to improve the county in its early settlement. Nathan had 6 children - George W., Montgomery, Nancy, Mary J., Helen and Alice. He died in Summit in 1881m the age of seventy-five. John C. Veit, our subject, was in the late war, enlisting Aug. 11, 1862; was in the battles of Antietam. Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the campaign of the Wilderness and Petersburg. At the latter he was taken prisoner, and confined in Andersonville and Florence Prisons 9 months. He was then exchanged, and rejoined his regiment near Washington, D.D. and was honorably discharged in June 1865.
