UK Census Date 1851: Living with her parents and three siblings in Egloshayle, Cornwall, England. Aged 20 and single. Also in the household were five servants.
Martha emigrated from England to New Zealand with her parents and four siblings on board the Joseph Fletcher, departing London on 31 August 1852 and arriving into Auckland on 8 October 1852.
She married John Grigg on 7 June 1855 in Trinity Church, Auckland, New Zealand. They had at least 8 children.[2]
She passed away in 1884.
MRS JOHN GRIGG.
The many friends of Mrs John Grigg will learn with deep regret the news of her death, which took place at her residence, Longbeach, early yesterday morning. About a fortnight ago Mrs Grigg caught a severe cold, which resulted in an attack of inflammation in the throat, and finally of the lungs. For the past week Dr. Ross had been in almost constant attendance at Longbeach, but in spite of his efforts, Mrs Grigg gradually sank, and expired as above stated early on Friday morning. It is scarcely necessary to mention that the deceased lady was greatly beloved by a very large role of friends, not only in the Ashburton and Longbeach districts, but throughout Canterbury and other parts of the colony, and the news of her death will be learnt with very deep regret. Kind-hearted, benevolent and sympathetic, Mrs Grigg never missed an opportunity of doing an act of kindness or a deed of true Christian charity and benevolence, and was ever ready to extend true womanly love and friendship to the sick, or needy, and she was a most zealous worker in the cause of the church. The news of her death cast a deep gloom over the whole district, and her absence will be sadly felt. Much general sympathy is felt for the bereaved family.[3]
