Friedrich Johann Count von Alvensleben was born on April 9, 1836, and died on September 16, 1913. He was the son of Ferdinand Count von Alvensleben and Pauline von der Schulenburg.
After graduating from the Pädagogium in Halle (Saale) , he studied law at the University of Berlin and the Univrsity of Bonn. He worked an auscultator and trainee lawyer.
He joined the diplomatic service in 1861, initially serving as an attaché in Brussels, and passed the diplomatic exam in 1863. He served a a legation secretary in Dresden, Munich, Stuttgart, St. Petersburg and Washington, D.C.
In 1871, he joined the office of Otto von Bismarck, the Chancellor.
He was named a Counselor in St. Petersburg in 1872, as Consul General in Bucharest in 1876, and as Minister Resident in Darmstadt in 1879. He served as Ambassador to the Netherlands from 1882 to 1884, to the United States from 1884 to 1888, to Belgium from 1888 to 1900, and to Russia from 1900 to 1905.
