Curt von François was a Luxemburgian-born geographer, cartographer, and officer of the imperial the colonial troops in the African territories of the German colonial empire (today's Namibia).[1]

Curt Carl Bruno Von Francois was born on 2 October 1852, and baptised on 16 Nov 1852 in Evangelische Kirche. Militärgemeinde Luxembourg. He was the son of Bruno Hugo Carl Friedrich Von Francois and Helena Maria Amalie Von Francois.[2][3]

He served as a soldier in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871. His father was a Prussian general, who was killed in the Battle of Spicheren.[1]

In 1883, he worked as a geographer on an exploratory expedition along the Kasai River in the Congo, and again in 1885. In 1887, he was stationed in German West Africa, where he explored Togoland and trade routes north. In 1889, facing local resistance to German colonial plans in southwestern Africa, he was contracted to provide security, stationing himsel at Otjimbingwe. In 1894, he retired from military service and returned to Germany.[1]

He married a Damara princess Amalia Gawazas while in German South West Africa. They had daughter Josephine. His wife died soon after.[1]

Kurt Karl Bruno von Francois, age 44, then married Amelie Gertrud Margareth Meyer on 5 January 1897 in Berlin, Germany.[4]

They had four children, two of died as infants.[1]

Major Curt v Francois died on 28 Dec 1931. He was buried at Invalidenfriedhof, Berlin-Mitte, Mitte, Berlin, Germany.[5]
