"He received his education at the city schools in Ahrweiler and Neuwied as well as the grammar school in Koblenz. After graduating, he went to the 8th Pioneer Division on October 17, 1848, as a one-year volunteer . In 1849 he took part in the fight against the Baden Revolution , where he took part in the battles at Philippsburg, Waghäusel , Durlach and Kuppenheim. Then he was on September 30, 1849 in the United Artillery and Engineering Schooldetached. On December 28, 1849 he was appointed Portepeefähnrich, on August 1, 1850 he was transferred to the 7th Engineer Division and on November 17, 1850 to the 1st Reserve Engineer Company. On December 31, 1850, he was transferred to the 3rd Engineer Inspection with a patent on September 7, 1850 as an extra-budgetary second lieutenant. On February 15, 1851, he was sent back to school and on July 10, 1852 to the 4th pioneer department. Finally, on May 31, 1853, he was made an engineer officer and on June 1, 1853, he was transferred to the 8th engineering department. On May 8, 1855, he came to the fortress of Koblenz for fortification services, there he became Premier-Lieutenant on October 5, 1858. On September 23, 1859 he returned to the 8th Pioneer Division and rose to captain on June 2, 1863. From November 18, 1863 to May 6, 1864 he was assigned to the Jade for fortification services in Wilhelmshaven . After his return he became commander of the 1st Reserve Engineer Company on September 12, 1865 and commander of the 4th Company of Engineer Battalion No. 11 on October 30, 1866.

During the mobilization for the Franco-Prussian War , he came to the General Command of the XI on July 16, 1870 as 2nd engineer officer. Army Corps. During the campaign he fought near Weißenburg and Sedan . In addition, the Iron Cross 2nd class was acquired from Wörth . He was at the sieges of Pfalzburg and Paris as well as the battles at St. Cloud and Montretout, where he also acquired the Iron Cross 1st class .
