"He received his education at the city schools in Ahrweiler and Neuwied as well as the grammar school in Koblenz. After graduating, he went to the 8th Pioneer Division on October 17, 1848, as a one-year volunteer . In 1849 he took part in the fight against the Baden Revolution , where he took part in the battles at Philippsburg, Waghäusel , Durlach and Kuppenheim. Then he was on September 30, 1849 in the United Artillery and Engineering Schooldetached.
