Richwara was the first wife of Berthold von Zähringen.[1][2] Her origin is unknown and speculations about her birth date range from before 1030[3] to between 1020 and 1030.[4] Similarly for her death Charles Cawley lists "before 1056"[3] while others limit themselves to around 1070 or before.[5]
Nothing is known about Richwara's parents. Wilhelm Wegener proposes Hermann IV von Schwaben,[6] followed by Charles Cawley who remarks, however, that "this seems unlikely from a chronological point of view. Richwara gave birth to five children, presumably between [1045/55], so is unlikely to have been born later than 1030, when her supposed father was only 15 years old and her supposed mother about 10."[3] Others find it more likely that her father was Herzog Konrad II von Kärnten, based on territorial transactions and inferred inheritance rights.[7][4][8] It should be noted here that both men have no documented offspring.
It is believed she died before or around 1070 as the second marriage of Berthold to Beatrix de Mousson is estimated by Eduard Heyck to have taken place in the late 1060's, early 1070's.[5] Charles Cawley dates this marriage to possibly 1056 and consequently Richwara's death to before 1056 without citing a source.[9]
