Biography

George Vose (or Voce) was born December 27th 1863 in Windle. He was the son of Thomas Vose and Elizabeth (Rigby) Vose. He was christened January 31st 1864 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston (Anglican). His father was listed in the christening record as an engineer, and the family's address as Windle.

By April 2nd 1871, the family were living in College Street, Windle. Thomas was working as a colliery engineer, and nine of Thomas and Elizabeth's children were in the household - Mary Ann, aged 23, was working as a glass smoother; William (19) and John (18) as coal miners; Robert (16) as a drawer in the mine, pulling cartloads of coal for the miners; Margret (14) as a glass smoother; Sarah (10), James (9), George (7) and Edward (4) were in school. Elizabeth's widowed father Richard Rigby, a former coal miner, was also living with them.

By April 3rd 1881, the family were still living in College Street, and the father was still a colliery engineer. Only five of the children were still living with their parents - Robert (26) was working as a general labourer; Margaret (24) as a domestic servant; James (19) and George (17) as general labourers; and Edward (14) as an errand boy to a solicitor. A grandson William Vose, aged five, was also in the household on census day.

George married Mary Bold on August 10th 1884 at St John's Church in Ravenhead (Anglican).

By April 5th 1891, George and Mary were living in Peasley Cross Lane in Sutton. George was working as a general labourer, and they had three children - John Thomas (6), Mary Elizabeth (3) and baby George. There were also three lodgers, not known to be relatives.

By March 31st 1901, they were still living in Peasley Cross Lane. George was now working as a sheet glass grinder, and there were four children - John Thomas (17) was working as an apprentice glass flattener; Mary Elizabeth was 14, George junior was 11, and Martha Ellen was eight. One of the lodgers from the 1891 census, William J Crilley, was still boarding with them, and was now a locomotive engine driver.

By April 2nd 1911, they were still in Peasley Cross Lane, and George was still working as a glass grinder. Mary Elizabeth (23) was working as a servant at home, and George junior (20) as a glass engine driver. They had two boarders, neither of whom had been with them in a previous census - a retired farmer and an Irish collier.

In the 1921 Census George was still at 119 Peasley Cross Lane. George was a glass working labourer at Pilkingtons. He lived with wife, Mary, granddaughter, Phyllis Vose (aged 12), adopted daughter Mildred Ellison (aged 18) and three unrelated lodgers.

George died in 1933 at the age of 69, and was buried on October 17th in St Helens Cemetery. Mary died in 1938, and was buried in the same grave on August 18th 1938.
