John was born in 1810. He is the son of John Waddell and Nancy Blanchard.
He first married 3 Oct 1833 in Truro, Susannah Lynds. [1] She was born circa 1833 in Truro.
He married secondly, 25 Jun 1844 in Truro, Jane Blanchard. She was born 1 Jul 1807 in Truro and died 3 Dec 1878 in Truro.
The 31 Jul 1852 edition of the New Brunswick Courier reported: “At a Public Commencement of Pennsylvania College held March last the Degree Doctor of Medicine was conferred upon John Waddell, Esq., Member of Royal College of Surgeons, London & Medical Superintendant of our Provincial Lunatic Asylum.”[2]
Dr. John Waddell was the medical superintendent at the Provincial Lunatic Asylum in Saint John, New Brunswick, between 1852 and 1873.
In 1871, John Wallace [sic], medical doctor, 61, Jane W., 63, Ivan L., 25, Sarah, 23 and Harriet Archibald, 55, were residing in Lancaster parish, Saint John, Saint John Co., New Brunswick.[3] Everyone in the household was born in Nova Scotia.
After his retirement in 1873, he returned to Truro where he died in 1878. The 2 Sep 1878 edition of The Daily Telegraph reported: “d. At his residence in Truro, N.S., 29th ult., John Waddell, Esq., M.D., 69th year.”[4] The 31 Aug 1878 edition of The Presbyterian Witness reported: “d. 29th inst., in 69th year, s/o late Rev. John Waddell, 69th year. B. 17 Mar 1810, at Truro, left widow & dau.”[5]
