Sources: Title: Genealogy of the Johannes Wedel Family, Record Type: Manuscript, Author Address: 95 Hoyt St., Lakewood CO 80226 Page: The complete part of the manuscript text on Daniel Waddle follows:

Daniel Waddle first appears in personal property tax records of Augusta Co., Virginia where he is listed from 1785 through 1789 (Personal property tax lists of Augusta County, 1782-1795, FHL US/CAN Film 2024461). On 6 May 1788 Daniel signed a marriage bond for John Waddle Jr. in Augusta Co., Virginia.

It is suggested here that this Daniel was a son of Johannes Wedel and was named for Johannes' father Daniel. Assuming Johannes followed standard German naming patterns Daniel would have been the oldest son. Daniel's date and place of birth are unknown. It seems likely that he was born about 1759 near Strasburg, Frederick Co. (now Shenandoah Co.), Virginia.

The next record found for Daniel appears to be in Washington Co., Virginia personal property tax lists. There on 11 Apr 1793 he and his brother Peter are listed next to each other under the surname Waddal (Personal Property Tax Lists of Washington Co. Virginia, 1782-1805, FHL Film 1905744). Daniel and Peter Waddle continue to be listed on the lists through 1797. Only Daniel is listed in 1798, but is not listed in 1799. He may be the Daniel Waddle shown in the 1799 tax list for Grainger Co., Tennessee as one free white in Capt. Coxes Company (Mary Barnett Curtis, Early East Tennessee Tax Lists, 1964). Daniel is again listed in Washington Co. in 1800, is missing in 1801, and is listed with a John Waddle in 1802 who probably was his brother John Jr. Daniel and John Jr. continue to be listed through 1806, which is the last record found for Daniel; possibly he died before the 1807 tax list was taken (Virginia Washington County Personal Property Tax Lists1806-1827A, FHL Film 1905745).

In the 1796 Washington Co. tax list Peter Waddle is listed on 20 Apr and Daniel is listed on 22 Apr. This seems to indicate they were not living next to each other. On 15 Sep 1796 James Armstrong and Susannah his wife deeded to James Carson, Christopher Aklin, Edmond Lynch, Daniel Waddle, and William Huston a small plot for a school in the Town of Abingdon, Washington Co., Virginia (Lewis Preston Summers, Annuals of Southwest Virginia 1769-1800, 1929, p. 1316). This record suggests Daniel was living in Abingdon and hid interest in a school for children may indicate that he had children.

It is possible Daniel settled for a while in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. A Daniel Waddle's "old survey" is mentioned in a deed dated 8 Aug 1824 between John H. Wadlow and Augustin Bishop (Sullivan Co. Deed Book 10, p. 75). No indication is given when the survey was made.

A marriage record for Daniel has not been found though some evidence in addition to the school record suggests that he was married and that he may have had several children. A David Waddle (Wadle) first appears in the Washington Co., Virginia tax lists in 1807 next to a John Waddle (Wadle) who appears to have been John Waddle Jr. David is listed next to John through 1811. He is listed in militia records in 1805, 1809, and 1810 (Gerald H. Clark, The Militia of Washington County, Virginia, 1777-1835, 1979, p. 155). In the 1810 Federal Census David is listed as aged 26 to 45 with one female 16 to 26. However, he is not shown to be living close to John Waddle as the 1810 tax list might imply. This information suggests David was born about 1785. He was too old to have been a son of John Jr. or Peter, but could have been a son of Daniel. In 1785 Daniel was living in Augusta Co., Virginia.

Records have not been found that indicate who the female was who was listed with David in the census record. If she was his wife there could have been children. On 19 Nov 1819 it was ordered by the Washington County Court (Washington County Minute Book 2, p. 92, Library of Virginia Reel 23) that the Overseers of the Poor bind out to suitable masters and mistresses the children of Peggy Waddle to learn suitable trades according to law. No records have been found that indicate the name of Peggy's husband. Possibly she was the wife of Daniel, or possibly the wife of David. Other records seem to show she was not the wife of David and if David was the son of Daniel she was apparently not related.

On June 22 1820 Eve Waddle filed a motion in court the Washington County Virginia Court (Library of Virginia Reel 23, p. 197) as a claimant of the military bounty land of her son David Waddle deceased. The motion stated that she was the mother of David Waddle, that he enlisted in Capt. Spotswood Henry's Co June 1812 and died intestate in service at Fort St. Philips on Mississippi River June 15, 1817, and that she was one the heirs at law of the said David. The motion also states that none of the other heirs at law have applied for the bounty lands within the knowledge of the court.

Unfortunately the names of the other heirs were not given in any records found. On 15 Aug 1820 Eve Waddle was granted a certificate for the administration of the estate of David Waddle (Washington County Minute Book 2, p. 210, Library of Virginia Reel 23). If this David was the son of Daniel his mother Eve would have been Daniel's wife. However, it seems unlikely that Eve would have been an heir of David's if Peggy was his wife and they had had children.

Keith D Pitner [1] reported that Joseph Waddle was born in Abington, Washington Co., Virginia in 1805. According to Pitner, Joseph and his brother Michael moved to Sevier County, Tennessee and eventually changed their surnames to Wardell. In 1805 the only Waddles listed in the tax lists were John and Daniel Waddle. The above-mentioned 1796 school record refers to a Daniel Waddle in Abington suggesting these Waddle males might have been sons of Daniel.

Washington County, Virginia military records (Gerald H. Clark, The Militia of Washington County, Virginia, 1777-1835, 1979, p. 155) show a Michael Waddle in 1817, 1822, 1825, and 1827 and a Joseph Waddle is listed in 1824. Michael is first listed in the Washington Co. tax records (Personal Property Tax Lists of Washington Co. Virginia, 1806-1827A, FHL Film 1905745) in 1820.

Other records suggest Daniel might have had three other possible sons: John B., Alexander C., and Cody Waddle.

In previous versions of this report it was held that John B. Waddle was a likely son of Daniel because of his close relationship in the genealogical records to the Johannes Wedel family. A y-DNA test on a male descendent of John B. Waddle (WX-1, The Waddell Project:y-, http://tinyurl.com/7hdkxcn) does not match the y-DNA results for a descendent of Daniel’s brother Peter (WX3). This shows he was not a biologic son of Daniel or one of the other sons in the Johannes Wedel family. The close relationship to the family, as described in the following paragraphs, could possibly have been through his wife Polly Waddle. John B.’s ancestry remains undetermined.

John B. Waddle married Polly Waddle Dec 1816 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee according his Declaration for Pension, War of 1812 (Ruby G. ("Gail") Baker-Hawkins, First Families of Tennessee Certificate Application No. 4051-1 dated 8 April 1996, The East Tennessee Historical Society, Knoxville, Tennessee). In 1816 the Johannes Wedel family is the only Waddle/Waddell family found in Sullivan Co. records.

The Polly Waddle who married John B. Waddle Dec 1816 in Sullivan Co. may possibly have been the daughter of Daniel's brother Peter. Discussion of the conflicting evidence for her possible relation to the Wedel family is given in the section of this report on Peter.

A John B. Waddle witnessed the deed for the land Johannes (John Waddle) sold to his son Peter on 28 Mar 1821 in Grainger Co. Shortly after, John B Waddle's son William Wallace was born 30 Aug 1821 in Grainger Co. On 12 April 1832, Peter and a William Waddle, who probably was Peter's son, were witnesses for a survey of a 50-acre parcel for John B. Waddle in Pulaski Co., Kentucky (Gail Hawkins, personal communication Feb 2000 and Pulaski Co., Survey Book 2, p 129). John B. Waddle is listed in Pulaski Co. tax records from 1824 through 1839, the last year checked.

This information shows John B. Waddle and his wife Polly had a strong relationship with Peter Waddle and Peter’s father Johannes. One might suggest from this that John B. was Peter's son. However, information in the Waddle Bible record in the Waddle family file at the Pulaski County (Kentucky) Historical Society file shows that Peter had a son named John S. Waddle, who was born about 1795 and died 1 Apr 1849.

Federal census records for Wayne Co., in 1850 , Pulaski Co. in 1860 and Mercer Co. Kentucky 1870 show John B. Waddle was born about 1789, 1795, or 1787 in Tennessee (Gail Hawkins, First Families of Tennessee file 4051-1). Then in 1880 he appears to be listed on the census as Thomas Waddle, age 93 and born in Kentucky. He is listed there with his daughter Martha King. These census records suggest the person who reported John B.'s age in the census reports did not know his age and there may be some question regarding the state in which he was born. According to his pension record the last request for pension reimbursement was dated April 19, 1887. Presumably he died prior to that date.

In 1825 and 1826 an Alexander C. Waddle is listed next to John B. Waddle in Pulaski Co. Kentucky tax records (Pulaski County Tax Assessor, Tax Books 1823-1840, FHL US/CAN Film 8210). These are the only records found for of Alexander. The listing next to John B. suggests he might have been a brother as he is too old to be a son and is not listed in the records of the families of Peter and Henry. John B. Waddle had a son William Wallace who in turn had a son named John Alexander Campbell Samuel Waddle, which may indicate the name Alexander C. was a name from the family of the mother of John B. and Alexander C.

A Cody Waddle is a possible son of Daniel. Cody is listed in Grainger Co., Tennessee personal property tax records in 1824, though he is not listed close to Johannes and his sons Peter and George. Cody married Sally Williams, 6 July 1825, in Pulaski Co., Kentucky. These are the only records found for Cody so it is not clear if or how he may have been related to the Waddle family. He is not listed in the Pulaski Co., Kentucky tax records. The fact that he is listed where the only other Waddles listed are members of the Johannes Wedel family suggests he might have been a member of the family. [1][2]
