Nancy aka Nannie Alma Wade was born in June of 1877 to Noah and Martha Phillips Wade in Floyd, Virginia. In May of 1900 she married James Ethelbert Sledd (1872–1957). One of her grandchildren left the following memorial for her at Find-a-Grave: Nannie was a kind and sweet soul. Grandma was a great cook, pastry, and bread were abundant in her home. On many occasion I would help her churn the butter. She would look into that deep vat and check the cream and tell me to continue to churn which I did until it was finally made. Grandma not saying to much would take the separate pieces or butter and mold it in her hands until it was ground and about 5 inches tall. Then with her special wood seal she would imprint her name on the top. This would be taken to the local shops to sell. In a buggy drawn by a horse granny and I would take it to the local Eve Duncan Store were people from all around Copper Valley would purchase it. She would also barter for other goods as she needed. She lived her last years with her daughter Weta, in South Carolina. On there visit back to Radford she passed away sitting in the back yard of a friend. She had suffered with heart problems for many years and took different medications. She had deep set brown eyes and the sweetest smile. Always had a hug and kiss for you.
