28 September 1747 Started Life in Grafton, MA. Samuel was born to parents David Wadsworth and Hannah Paul in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.[1]
1768 Lived in Henniker, New Hampshire. Samuel "a single man, commenced clearing upon Goss Hill, and shortly after, exchanged places with Mr. Goss, where he lived and died."[2]
April 2, 1772 Married Margery. Samuel married Margery Hutchinson in Grafton, Massachussets, [3][4] the daughter of the Reverend Aaron Hutchinson and Margery Carter.[5] It appears that the couple named their first child after Samuel's grandfather (Samuel born July 14, 1772),[6] and their second son after Margery's father, Aaron, born February 5, 1775.[7]
23 April 1775 Enlisted in the War Samuel was one of the townsmen of Henniker that enlisted four days after the Battle of Lexington, and he fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and on the roll of Captain Aaron Adams Company of 1776.[8] He was consistently referred to as Lieutenant in the town minutes. Samuel signed the oath of allegiance in March on 1776:
We the Subscribers do hereby solemnly engage and Promise, that we will to the utmost of our power, at the risque of our lives and fortunes, with arms oppose the hostile proceedings of the british fleets and armies against the United American Colonies.[2]
Samuel was one of the town's Selectmen that submitted the list of residents that would not sign the oath of allegiance.[2][9]
1776, 1777, 1782, 1795, and 1799 Elected Town Selectman (1 of 3 on the Town Board). [2]
1782, 1784, 1799, and 1801 Elected as Moderator at Annual Town Meetings.[2] Note that the online images of Henniker's town records are handwritten copies, and do not include original signatures. See citation #8. Howe-14801
1798 Property Assessed in Henniker The town records documented that Samuel had 1 poll, 1 horse, 2 cows, 3 3-year-olds, 2 2-year-olds, 1 1-year old, no orchard, 2 tillage, 9 mowing, 15 pasture; his farm was 50 acres in Lot 16, Range 6, plus 7 acres in Lot 15, Range 6, plus 40 acres in Lot 18, Range 6, plus 7 acres in Lot 17, Range 7, plus 50 acres in Lot 17, Range 8. 126 acres were unimproved. 1 real, 50 estate, 8 sum, 21 total. 1800 Taxed Samuel was taxed $1.17 for the State, $ .26 for the County, $1.27 for the School, $ .38 for the Town, and$ .89 for the MInister. [10]
March 19, 1819 Incorporated a Religious Society Samuel was amongest the first members of the church founded in 1769,[2] so it was surprising to see an asterisk by his name in the church's history. In Articles of Faith and Covenant: With a Brief History of the Congregational Church in Henniker, NH, the membership list has a asterisk by names indicating "those whose relations with the church has ceased by removal."[11] The townspeople did not always have the two-thirds in agreement needed to settle a minister, so in 1803, the Reverend Sawyer and some of his followers, including Samuel, broke away as the Calvinistic Society, independent of town funding. The waffling of Henniker's lack of commitment to establish a church is described in Cogswell's History of Henniker. Samuel's name was listed on an official notice in 1819 reprinted in Cogswell's chapter titled Separation of Church and State.
