Eugene Drummond McMillan Wald was born April 16, 1933 at Cable, Bayfield, Wisconsin, USA . He was the son of Walter Wald and Phyllis McMillan.

In 1954 he married Jean Elizabeth Pugh in Hayward, Sawyer, Wisconsin, USA. Two children were born of this union.
