James was born May 9, 1895 in Peru, Illinois. At age 23 he married Edna Ruth Hopper sometime after March 1919 <exact date needs to be confirmed>. They had two children together.

He passed away November 6, 1938 the result of a tragic accident in Moline, Illinois. He was a miliatry veteran and was buried in the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois.
