John William Walls, born 18 Jun 1826 in Casey Co., KY, a son of Elias G. Walls and his unknown first wife. He enrolled in the U.S. Army, for duty in the Mexican War, 21 May 1846 in Stanford, Lincoln Co., KY, as a private and served in Capt. Daugherty's Second Regiment of Ky Inf, which later became Co. G. He was discharged in New Orleans, LA, on 10 Jun 1847 and returned to the Casey-Lincoln Co. area of KY. Exactly one month after his discharge, 10 Jul 1847, he married Margaret Ann Yocum in Lincoln Co. She died 28 Feb. 1859 in Washington Co., KY. John married second, in Mercer Co., KY on 21 Jan 1860 to Mary Ann Yocum, sister to the above Margaret Ann. John again enrolled for active duty when the Civil War came to KY. He was mustered into the U.S. Army on 2 Jan 1862 as a second Lieutenant at Camp Harrod in Mercer Co., and served in Capt. Hannibal Downey's Company, the 19th Reg. of KY Inf., which later became Co. E. John was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 12 Aug 1862 at Cumberland Gap, TN, but the toll of exposure and lack of food was too much for his nearly forty year old body. He resigned his commission and was discharged at Young's Point, LA on 5 Mar 1863, before his unit took part in the famous Battle of Vicksburg. He returned to his home in Washington Co. and resumed farming, in as much as his health allowed. He purchased 120 acres from W.T. Hedges on 1 Jan 1866 on Beaver Creek in Washington Co., lying in that section of the county that was later given over to Anderson Co. This area was known as "the cut-off." Here he spent the remainder of his life, dying on 19 Apr 1914 at 5 p.m. of "Senile Heart Failure." He was buried in the Antioch Christian Church Cemetery.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
