James was the son of Edward and Sarah Smith Walters, born in Leek Stafforshire, England.[1] He married Harriet Anne Dow in Dec 1867[2]He was a Medical doctor by profession, having studied at Guy's Hospital, London, prior to emigrating to the United States with his wife and two children in 1872. He settled in the East End of Pittsburgh, and was a highly respected physician. He and his wife separated in 1897, and there was some sort of contention as she sued him for money, and he publicly printed that since she left him, he would not be giving her funds. [3][4] He was interred in Allegheny Cemetery.[5]
