Sarah Ward was christened on 10 Jan 1830 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Richard and Sarah Ward. Her father's occupation was recorded as blacksmith, and the family's address as Eccleston.
By June 6th 1841, the family were living in Birchall's Row, Eccleston. Sarah's father was a blacksmith; her brother John was an apprentice. Sarah's 2-year-old cousin Eliza Ward was in the household.
By March 30th 1851, they were still in Eccleston, and Sarah's father was still a blacksmith. Three of his children were in the household - Margaret (aged 28, and employed as a blacksmith), Sarah (21, and a blacksmith) and Richard (18, and a blacksmith). Sarah's cousin Eliza Ward (now 12, and a scholar) was also with them.
