Cuthbert Wardlaw of Balmule is thought to have been born between 1532 and 1539 at Balmule in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland. On 28th May 1562 he married Catherine Dalgleish [1] when he'd probably have been in his mid–late twenties.
Although The Peerage claims Cuthbert's first child was a daughter named Nicole who was born in July 1545, that is probably incorrect, for several reasons …
1. in 1545, Cuthbert would still have been a child, probably aged between nine and thirteen
2. it's very likely that Nicole's name and sex may have been misinterpreted … Cuthbert's first-born was his son, Nicholas, born in 1560
Cuthbert and Catherine had six "known" children, five sons and a daughter [once again, according to The Peerage] but other sources reviewed for Catherine (Dalgleish) Wardlaw list 11 children … six sons and five daughters. [2]
Cuthbert and his family are thought to have been a cadet branch … ie, a family descended from a younger son of the original family … of the Wardlaws of Torrie in Fifeshire, Scotland or of Balmule in Fifeshire. [3] Other sources, however, suggest he has different origins.[4]
Birth Date: ca. 1536 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland
Six Children of Cuthbert Wardlaw and Katherine Dalgleich:
1. Further research is needed to establish Cuthbert's parentage. Research added to his wife's profile on 28 October 2021 noted that Cuthbert was a "…younger son of John Wardlaw, Laird of Torrie (1512-1557) and Elizabeth Beaton of Balfour, was born between 1532 and 1539, making him 20 to 27 in 1559. [11] Cuthbert Wardlaw was called as a witness in the disputes over a lease by the Dalgleish family of Dunnygask on July 5, 1589, when he gave his age at that time as “fifty or thereby," indicating he was born around 1539 or slightly before.[12] "
