Biography

Elizabeth Waring was born at Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England in 1861^[1]. She was baptised at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 5th May 1867, the daughter of Henry Waring and Sarah (Bramley) Waring.^[2]

In 1871 she is with her family in Sutton in Ashfield and working as a seamer - she was 10! ^[3]

In 1881 she is with her family in Parliament Street, Sutton in Ashfield and working as a seamer of cotton hosiery.^[4]

She married John Spencer at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 21st February 1885.^[5] John was a 22 year old bachelor of Cryer's Yard. His father was William Spencer, framework knitter. Elizabeth was a 22 year old spinster of Bower's Yard. She was the daughter of Henry Waring, framesmith. Witnesses to the marriage were Everett Spencer and Harriet Spencer.^[6]

On the 1891 census, John & Elizabeth were living at Forest Street, Sutton in Ashfield where John gave his occupation as hosiery factory hand. Also in the household were their children, Arthur, (8) Edward (5) and Ellen.(2)^[7]

The 1901 census shows John & Elizabeth living on Forest Street. In the household was their children Edward, (15) Ellen, (12) Thomas, (9) John (7) & Hilda,(1) plus Elizabeth's sons from before her marriage, Henry Waring (20) and Arthur Waring. (17)^[8]

John died in 1909, leaving Elizabeth widowed.

On the 1911 census, Elizabeth (50) lived at 33 Forest Street, Sutton in Ashfield. She recorded that she'd had seven children, and all were living. Also in the household were Ellen, Thomas, John and Hilda.^[9]

She died at Sutton in Ashfield in 1922, aged 60 years^[10]. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 3rd May 1922, and her abode at the time of death was 33 Forest Street, Sutton.^[11]
