Biography

Patty Watkins was born about 1780. She passed away in 1849. She was the daughter of James Watkins and Esther Whitney.

She married 1st on 10 Jun 1799 to Fisher Whitney. Patty and Fisher were first cousins, both grandchildren of Mark Whitney (1700-1760) and Tabitha Mellen (1703-?).

Their children are:

  1. Patty Watkins Whitney 1800-1875 (see Notes below)
  2. James Watkins Whitney 1803-1881

She married 2nd c.1805 to Elias Lee. Their children are:

  1. Betsey Lee aka "Patty"; 1806-1875; m. Jason Griswold (he d. 1826) See Notes Below.
  2. William Dunton Lee; 1808-1860
  3. Esther Lee 1810-1858; m. May 1828 to Asahel P. Adams; m.2nd bef. 1849 to Adolphus Abbey
  4. Clark Lee 1812 - ? ; no record of a marriage found to date
  5. Polly Lee 1814-1847; m. Adolphus Abey
  6. Rodney Roswell Lee (went by "Roswell") 1816-1899; m.1st Roxana Clark; m. 2nd Jane, a sister of Robert Shay
  7. Diodama Lee 1818-1838; m. John Lamereux
  8. Phebe Lucretia Lee 1820-1838; did not marry
  9. Olive Lee 1822-1823; died infant.

She married 3rd, after the death of Elias in 1825, to Nathan Tyler (say about 1835). No record of any children of this marriage found to date; however, the ages of Patty (55) and Nathan (55+) in 1835 suggest that they did not have children.

The above information confirmed in the Petition presented to the Surrogate's Court by Adolphus Abbey, husband of Polly, upon the death of Patty Watkins Tyler, 1849. See also Lee-29710

Notes

Berkshire, Massachusetts is home to many of the earliest Whitney and Watkins families in America.

Patty aka Polly married Fisher Whitney (recorded 3 Jul 1799 at Berkshire, Massachusetts.) ; a subsequent entry was made into the record collection entitled "Massachusetts Marriages, 1695-1910" which gives the date 10 Jun 1799. The actual marriage date is September 1799.

The Jason Griswold issue: Frederick Clifton Pierce states in his Whitney book cited above:

  • " Fisher Whitney (Jason, Mark, Benjamin, John), b. Natick, Mass., Jan. 3, 1775; m. in Italy, N. Y., June, 1797, Patty Watkins, of Partridgefield, Mass.; b. Peru, in 1780. She m. 2d, at Italy in 1805, Elias Lee; b. 1777; d. Feb. 1, 1825. She d. in Mass.. Mar , 1849. "....."He (Fisher) died at the early age of thirty-seven, sincerely mourned by a large circle of acquaintances. He d. Dec. 19, 1805; res. Italy, N. Y. "
  • However, he then names their children: "i. James Watkins, b. June 21, 1803; m. Betsey Harper.... ii. Patty Watkins, b. Sept. 9, 1800; m. Jan. 15, 1823, Jason Griswold; res. Italy, N. Y. Ch.: Fisher, b. Mar. 28, 1825; res. Italy; Sophronia, b. Nov. 22, 1823; Lutia Ann, b. July 23, 1830; m. Oct., 1852; Mary Armborn, b. July 23, 1830; m. July 27, 1852. He d. abt. 1850. She d. June, 1880. "

This contradicts the History and Directory of Yates, that states that it was Betsey, daughter of Patty Watkins and Elias Lee, who married Jason Griswold. The "Yates" source contains a number of errors and should not be relied upon as a singular source.

Since I can find no corroborating evidence in Census records to support the Jason-Betsey marriage, for now I am leaving it as Patty-Jason, pending further research.

A book entitled "The Family and Personal History of William Octavo Lee" (his father was William Dutton Lee, Betsey's brother) may shed some light on it. A FamilySearch member, citing that text, has Betsey Lee married 24 Sep 1832 to David Crawford (1802-1875); no children recorded. [6]

John, I think I got it straightened out at last.

Thanks!

I'm not sure how you think that the Surrogate Court petition refers to a Martha. It clearly states her name as Patty Tyler [her 3rd husband] and it was filed by Adolphus Abbey, Patty's son-in-law.

I also have not found a birth record for Patty.

I think that Patty and Fisher were 1st cousins, I added that to the Notes.

I will probably have some additions and or comments on their children after I've had time to review the data.

Thanks again for your comments.

I don't believe I added the name "Martha." Since Patty is a common nickname for Martha, I have not corrected it. I have never seen her name as anything but Patty or Polly (which I believe is a mis-reading of hand written "Patty"). I believe that Polly (Watkins-6369) is the same person as Patty (Watkins-6447) and they should be merged, or Polly deleted.

Re: the Find A Grave memorial for Patty. That has always bothered me, as I am certain that no one born in the 1780's was ever named "Patricia."

Marriage: the record [4] is for "Intention to marry," not the marriage date. I believe that intentions were filed 2 weeks to 2 months before the actual marriage took place.

I have made some edits to this profile to clarify the issue of "Martha" and "Patty" to the extant possible. Thanks!
