John Watson was a Quaker. He emigrated from Cumberland to Staplestown in Carlow where he was fined for his beliefs. The Quaker records for his children show that he came from 'Crostad' (possibly Crosthwaite) in Cumberland and that his wife's name was Jane.

Note that Burke's Irish Family Records (and other Burke publications) wrongly merge this John Watson's family with that of another John Watson who came from Shropshire/Montgomeryshire and who was not a Quaker (although two of his sons were). The issue of the two separate families is discussed at length in 'The Watsons of Kilconner' cited as a source below.
