Major League Baseball Player. Born Montie Morton Weaver, he entered Emory & Henry College, a small Methodist school in Emory, Virginia, in 1923. In 1925, he earned money to help pay for college by playing for a coal company team in Jenkins, Kentucky. He played baseball, basketball, and track, graduating with honors in 1927 with a major in mathematics.
While playing semipro ball after his graduation, his pitching abilities brought him attention and he signed to pitch for the Durham Bulls in the Piedmont League, a minor league club. He pitched for them in 1928 and 1929 before moving up to the Baltimore Orioles of the International League.
During the off season he went to graduate school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and taught geometry while earning an M.S. degree in mathematics in 1929.
After performing well in 1930 and 1931 with the Orioles, his contract was purchased by the Washington Senators and he made his first mound appearance in the major leagues in September 1931. He was a right-handed pitcher in the majors for two teams in nine years. he pitched with the Washington Senators (1931 to 1938) and finished with the Boston Red Sox in 1939.
During his career he won 71 games and lost 50 with an earned run average of 4.36. He had 297 strike outs. He spent part of 1939 and the 1940 season on the Red Sox's Louisville farm club. In 1941, he had one final season in baseball with the Orioles in the International League before retiring from active ball playing.
He served with the Army Air Force during World War II, from which he was discharged as a captain. Returning from the war, he moved to Orlando, Florida. He first established an awning business, but then bought orange groves.
