Arrival in the Panhandle

On page 40 of "Unbroken Circle", Mary Jane Weaver says "My brother Martin had got a job as section foreman on the railroad several year before. He come back to see us and seemed to think it would be a good thing for John to get a job like his. Martin's work was at Goodnight, Texas, in Armstrong County, in the Panhandle of Texas and when he returned, Pa went with him. Pa had worked on the railroad before we was married but never as a foreman -- just as a section hand. When he went to Goodnight, he worked under Martin." The census and the deed records show that three brothers (Robert H., Charles, James H. Weaver) and their father also came to Armstrong Co. Presumably they came because John Weaver was already there.

Land in Armstrong Co.

23 Sep 1905 -- John J. Terrill, Commissioner of the General Land Office, certifies that J. G. Weaver on August 11, 1905 filed proof of 3 consecutive years of residence and occupancy on section 238 in block B-4, H. & G. N. RR. Co. in Armstrong Co. Said proof is corroborated by affidavits of Q. Moore, J. F. Hill and J. H. Weaver. The land was originally sold to J. G. Weaver August 8, 1900. (11/524)

21 Sep 1905 -- J. G. Weaver and M. J. Weaver of Armstrong Co. --> W. H. Conrad for $4200 ($3000 in cash; $1200 to be paid on or before September 21, 1906 with 8% interest) all of section 238 in block B-4 H&GN RR Co. in Armstrong Co. Buyer agrees to pay all amounts due to the State of Texas. (11/523) Buyer obtains a release November 3, 1905. (11/564) The records of the Texas General Land Office indicate that section 238 was patented to W. H. Conrad January 4, 1918.

(10/553) Block 4 is between Goodnight and Andrus Streets and is immediately south of the other tract and is separated from it by the railroad right of way.

January 10, 1905 -- J. G. Weaver and M. J. Weaver, his wife, of Armstrong Co. --> T. S. Cavins of Armstrong Co. for $585 the same 2 tracts. The sellers state that lots 16-18 was their homestead from which they moved in December, 1904.(13/18)

The deed records suggest that they were in Armstrong Co. from 1889 to 1905, but Unbroken Circle, Mary Jane Weaver's memoirs, makes it clear that they were not there continuously. They moved a lot from one place to another.

John Green Weaver

John Green Weaver, pioneer citizen, whose death is mourned by a host of friends, whose health had been poor for a year or more but his illness became critical only a few days ago, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wayne Darling, Sr., Monday, November 14, age 75 years, 4 months and 17 days.
John G. Weaver was born in Granville, North Carolina, June 28, 1857. He spent his early life and attended school in North Carolina. April 26, 1883 he was married to Miss Mary Jane Collins. Besides his widow he leaves to mourn his passing, three sons, L. E. Weaver, Santa Rita, New Mexico, L. C. Weaver, Deming, New Mexico, and V. E. Weaver, Hot Springs, New Mexico; and two daughters, Mrs. Wayne Darling, Sr., Deming, New Mexico, and Mrs. J. E. Early, Stinnett, Texas, and eighteen grandchildren.
The Weaver [sic] came to Deming to make their home October 1911. Mr. Weaver was a member of the Methodist Church since his youth. Had Mr. Weaver lived until April, Mr. and Mrs. Weaver would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock under the direction of G. W. Howe of Mahoney's Mortuary, with the Rev. J. E. Fuller officiating, burial was in Mountainview cemetery. The following friends served as pallbearers George P. Watkins, H. Guyon, H. S. Orton, V. R. Hon, J. F. Wehmhoner and Dr. Boucher.
