Biography

Nina Ruth Welch^[1] was born on 14 February 1913,^[1] in Russelville, Franklin County, Alabama,^[1][2] to Robert Carter Welch and Margaret Delilah Cheek.^[1]

In 1920, she was living with her parents and siblings in Tavanna, Lake County, Florida. ^[3]

She finished eight years of school.^[4]

She married Felix Leslie Patterson in 1929, in Orlando, Orange County, Florida. They were both living in Ocala, Florida. Felix was a packer. ^{[2] [5]} They were divorced in 1930, in Orange County, Florida.^[6]

In 1930, she was living at 6601 [?] Brownville, Houston, Harris County, Texas, with her sister Mildred and Mildred's family. She was not working. ^[7]

By April 1937, she married David Paul Wood. Although no marriage record has been found, and the divorce record does not include any identifying details, the Social Security applications index says that Nina Ruth Shannon was also named 'Ruth Welch Wood',^[1] and she seems to be the Ruth Wood living with her brother Paul in 1940.^[4] On 13 November 1939, he was granted a divorce, in Hillsborough County, Florida, because she had deserted him. ^[8]

In 1940, she was living with her brother Paul and his family, in Kent County, Delaware. She was engaged in home housework. ^[4]

She married Samuel Richard Shannon. They were not married in Cecil County, Maryland.^[9] They had one child.^[10]

During World War II, she was a mechanic, for the Wilmington Rail Yard, working in their machine shop.^[10]

In 1980, she retired from F W Woolworth.^[10]

She died on 23 March 2000, in the Christiana Hospital, New Castle County, Delaware. She was buried in Gracelawn Memorial Park. ^{[10] [11]}

    'Mrs. Shannon was a resident of Wilmington for over 50 years. She was born on February 14, 1913 to Robert and Margaret Welch in Russellville, AL and had 13 brothers and sisters. She was a homemaker, who during World War II, worked as a mechanic in the machine shop at the Wilmington Rail Yard. She retired from F.W. Woolworth in 1980. The widow of Richard S. Shannon, she doted on her family.
