Biography

Mary Jane Welch was born on Monday, 29 September 1834, in Pike County, Ohio (according to her obituary), no doubt in Seal Township. She was married (but being under age, she had to have the consent of her stepfather, Zachariah Smith) on 28 December 1848, at Harrisonville (now called Battle Ground), Wabash Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, to James Monroe Kinnamon.

They moved to West Jersey Township, Stark County, Illinois, about 1858. While James Kinnamon was still fighting in the Civil War, the family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa. They were later in Dallas County, Iowa, for a short time before moving to Osage Township, Labette County, Kansas, in 1869.

They moved into Mound Valley Township, Labette County, Kansas, in or before 1877, and Mary Jane died there on Sunday, 23 October 1898. A poem on her tombstone at Griffith Cemetery (northwestern corner of the township) reads: "Mother thou hast from us flown, To the regions far above, We to thee erect this stone, Consecrated by our love."

Her obituary says: "DIED--Mrs. James Kinneman, at her home 7 miles southeast of the city, on October 23, 1898, in the 66th year of her age. Mary Jane Welch was born in Pike County, Ohio, September 29, 1834. She moved to Indiana while yet a child and there grew to womanhood. Was married to James Kinneman November 15, 1848, and eleven children was the result of this union, seven of whom and her husband survive her. They came to Kansas in 1869, and are among the early pioneers of this section. She was a devoted wife, a kind mother, and a sociable neighbor. Her many friends and acquaintances will miss her kindly smile and cheering words. She was a presevering christian and will find a welcome with her Savior on whom she relied to the very last. Mary she rest in peace. The Family of this estimable lady have the sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances."
