He married Maria Hendrika Jansen in 1857 in Illinois (based on the birthdate and birthplace of their first child).[1] It is believed that they had five children, before Maria’s death.
He then married Euphemia Adelaide Kruse in 1864.[2] The couple apparently had nine children together,[3] as well as raising John’s children from his previous marriage.
