Jacob was a son of Jacob Wellman and Sarah (Orne) Wellman. He married Sophia Miner of Lempster, New Hampshire. Their children included:

- Matilda Sophia (Wellman) Starkweather (born 1832)
- Emma Eliza (Wellman) Howe (1836-1855)

Jacob married Roxanna Smart after the death of his first wife, and later married Sarah Richards on 14 October 1855.[1]
