Biography

The son of Eli Wellman and Maria Brownell (1822-), Edwin Wellman was born in Washtenaw County, Michigan[citation needed] in 1848, residing with his family by 1850 in Elyria Township, Ohio.[1] Edwin Wellman married Diantha (Walling) Wellman, the daughter of Daniel Walling and Mary Ames, marrying in Eaton County, Michigan on June 30, 1867[2] and having four children together:

  1. Martha Savilla Wellman (1868-)
  2. Louis Orlando Wellman (1870-1922)
  3. Charles Parson Wellman (1872-1909)
  4. Bertha M. Wellman (1874-)

Edwin and his family moved west to the new state of Kansas, taking residence in Cherokee Township, farming there.[3] They soon returned to Michigan, where his wife passed away in 1878. In 1880, Edwin and his children lived in Marion Township, Michigan, where he farmed and worked as a laborer.[4] Also in his household in 1870 was 17-year-old Cynthia (Clark) Wellman, the daughter of Gerald Clark and Christiana Brownell; she lived with the family as their housekeeper.

Edwin Wellman and Cynthia Clark married, having eight known children together:

  1. Elva Aurelia (Wellman) Hanson (1882-1971)
  2. Silas Bird Wellman (1887-1967)
  3. Byron David Wellman (1889-1968)
  4. George Wellman (1892-)
  5. Myrtle Wellman (1895-)
  6. Nina Wellman (1896-)
  7. Gerald Claude Wellman (1898-1965)
  8. Lloyd C. Wellman (1901-1978)

They made their home in the village of Howell, Michigan, in Marion Township, farming.[5][6] Edwin Wellman passed away there[7] at the age of 74 and is buried at Green Cemetery in Howell, Michigan.[8]
