The parents are named as Thomas and Mary West.
No other child has been found with these parents. There is a Thomas WEST who has children in Adlestrop with his wife Sarah before and after James' birth. Possibly the mother's name is wrong. Possibly James was illegitimate. Possibly there are two Thomas WESTs.
Further indications that the mother's name might be incorrect are that the available record is an copy from the original register made by the curate. The previous baptism had a mother called Mary, so a moment's inattention when copying might have resulted in him repeating the name by mistake.

The grave is to the South East of the chapel, between the chapel and the far hedge. It is nearer to the hedge than those of his daughters Elizabeth and Sarah, and is very near the edge of the cemetery and alongside the grave of John Thomas LUNN. They have identical markers - a headstone surmounted by a cross.
His stone reads: In Loving Memory of James WEST born Oct 13th 1801 died Aug 23rd 1883 'There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God'.
