Biography
Elizabeth Whelan was born in Scotland.
Elizabeth was born about 1853. She is the daughter of Patrick Whelan and Margaret Tobin.
The 1861 Scotland Census shows Elizabeth and her family living in a 2 roomed house in Balak Street, Bathgate, Linlithgowshire, Scotland. [1] The family consisted of the parents, Patrick (also known as Peter) and Margaret along with 7 children.[1]
In 1861 Elizabeth's father Patrick died. Her mother then married John Norton in 1864.
In the 1871 Scotland Census, Elizabeth is recorded as living with her family in Durhamtown Bathgate. Elizabeth was employed as an "outdoor worker". She was living with her mother, Margaret and her stepfather John Norton along with her brothers , James (13) and Patrick (11) and their step-sisters, Mary Norton (5) and Helen Norton (2). [2]
