On the 1871 census, a seven year old Herbert lived with his parents and six siblings on Alfreton Road, Sutton in Ashfield.[2]
The 1881 census shows Herbert, now aged 16, living at Sutton Woodhouse with his parents and four siblings. He was employed as a cotton winder.[3]
In 1891, Herbert is a 26 year old power FWK (framework knitter), living with his father Samuel, his sister Sarah and nephew George C. Whetton.[4]
Herbert married Isabella Parnell in the September quarter of 1894, in Mansfield District.[5]
In 1901, Herbert and Isabella lived at Alfreton Road, Sutton Woodhouse. Also in the household was Herbert's step son and daughter, Mabel Parnel and John W. Parnel, and their daughter Sarah J. Whetton, aged 2 weeks.[6]
The 1911 census records Herbert and Isabella living at Woodhouse Yard, Sutton in Ashfield. Also with them was Mabel Parnell, now aged 20, John William Parnell, aged 19, and Sarah Jane Whetton, 10 years old.[7]
He died at Sutton in Ashfield in 1925, aged 61 years[8], and was buried at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 28th October 1925. His address at the time of death was 58 Woodhouse Yard.[9]
