John was born on 8 October 1810. He was the son of Joshua Whitaker and Jane (Gracy) Whitaker.^[1]

In the 1850 census John (age 39) was living in Columbia, Georgia, USA.^[2]

John died at the age of 86 on 2 May 1897 and was buried in Fort Gordon, Richmond, Georgia, USA.^[1]
