With his parents and brother Leonard, William emigrated to New Zealand aboard the William Hyde arriving in Lyttelton in February 1852. [2]
He passed away in 1900 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch.[3]
"White, William Jr (1848-1900) was the son of William White the bridge builder and came out with his parents in the 'William Hyde' arriving 5 Feb [18]52. He was born in Cheshire where his father had learnt the silk trade. His first job was with the Christchurch Gas Company. He was then the successful contractor for the construction of the Southbridge and Pleasant Point branch railways. He then went into business with his father as a timber merchant with branches at Southbridge, Leeston, Christchurch, and Little River. When his father retired in [18]85 he became the sole proprieter of this business. He was elected a member of the Sydenham Borough Council in [18]78. He was an officer of the Christchurch Fire [?] Police Sep [18]71 and was a [?] then [?] in [18]71. He was a emeber of the Christchurch Drainage Board and Board of Health [18]80. He had become well known in Sydenham by his service in the Borough Council but his victory in the election to Parliament for Sydenham in [18]81 was remarkable. He got 662 votes, Charles Clarke a popular auctioneer of Sydenham 163, J W Treadwell[?] a clerk[?] 111, and J R Andrews a labout candidate 70. He was successful as a member and was very popular in Sydenham. The Lyttelton Times called him, "The silent consistent Mr White." A large dinner was given him Sep [18]82. He was a strong Liberal. He represented Sydenham on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, Feb '83. In the '84 election he beat very comfortably the foundryman J L Scott 776-462. He was at that time completely unbeatable in Sydenham. He resigned his seat in Parliament May '86. He was a membor of the Hospital and C A Board that dismissed Ritches[?] from the Orphanage and caused a great deal of public indignation by their method of doing so Mar '86. He was Chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board Sep '90, the year of the great wharf strike. He was Mayor of Sydenham '83-'85' Chairman of the Hospital Board '86-'89, member of the Waimakariri River Board. Married 17 Sep 1874 Martha, daughter of John Patton of Christchurch at St John's Latimer Square. He died at his home New Brighton, 19 July 1900, aged 51. One son, W A [White], 5 daughters."[4]
William was born in 1848. He passed away in 1900.
