Isaac "Fleet" White was born on 6 Mar 1846 in Greenbrier County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia). His death certificate says his father was named Isaac White as well.[1] Little is known of his early life.

Fleet was a Civil War veteran.[2] He enlisted in Company M, 5th Massachusetts (Colored) Cavalry on 30 April 1864. He mustered out 31 October 1865 in Clarksville, Texas.[3]

He worked at the Remington hotel in Pomeroy, Meigs County, Ohio before moving to Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio where he also worked as a hotel porter.[2][4]

Fleet married Anna Lucy Thomas on 18 Jun 1893.[5] They lived in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio. Their census records suggest that they didn't have any children.[6] In 1910, Anna's grandmother Lavina Turner lived with them.[7]

Fleet died on 24 Jul 1916 in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio. He was buried in the Pine Street Colored Cemetery in Gallipolis.[1][8]

Research Notes

  • Although Find A Grave: Memorial #14022899 clearly is meant to be the memorial page for this Isaac White, it has no gravestone image. It seems that Find A Grave: Memorial #13577116 is probably also supposed to correspond to this Isaac White - his wife's name and death date match, the name Isaac White matches, and the birth and death years are close, but off by about 3 years each. No other death records or obituaries have been found for an Isaac White in Gallipolis in 1913, so it seems that the gravestone probably just has mistakes in the years. The memorial page for 13577116 says that his parents were John D. and Louisa (Earl) White, though no source is given for that information.
  • The Civil War pension index on Fold3 (the regimental index) confirms that the Isaac White who died on 24 July 1916 is the same Isaac White who served in the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry (Colored). Image available on Fold3.
