Biography

William Edward White, child of William White, chemist, & his wife Mary Ann, was born in about 1824 and baptised on 6 June 1824 in St Martin-In-The-Fields, London, Westminster, England. At the time of his christening, the family was living at 16 Haymarket.^[1][2]

In the 1841 census Willm White (age 15) was in St Martin in The Fields, Middlesex, England.^[3]

In the 1851 census William (age 26), Lieutenant, was the unmarried brother of George F White in Hay Market, St Martin In The Fields, Middlesex, England.^[4]

William, son of William White (surgeon), married Mary Ann Goodban on 25 January 1865 in St Andrew, Barnsbury, Islington, England.^[5] After their marriage in London the couple spent time living overseas before returning to England at some point prior to 1881.

In 1867 William Edward White of the 3th N.L., Madras Staff Corps was promoted to Major. ^[6]

In 1868 Major William Edward White of Madras Staff Corps was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. ^[7]

In 1873 Lt Col William Edward White of Madras Staff Corps was promoted to Colonel, having completed the qualifying service as a Lt Col. ^[8]

In the 1881 census William (age 56), Col Staff Corps, was living with his wife, 3 daughters and 4 servants at 59 Chepstow Place, Kensington, London, England.^[9]

On 31st May 1883 Colonel William Edward White of Madras Staff Corps was transferred to the Unemployed Supernumerary List. This was almost certainly due to failing health as he died at 59 Chepstow Place, Bayswater, Middlesex, the next day, 1 June 1883,^[10] so that by the time notice of this was published he was noted as 'since deceased'.^{[11] [12]}

The following info relates to the son of this man, also named William Edward: William Edward White of the Bengal Staff Corps was the only son of Colonel W.E.White, Madras Army, and he married Jane, younger daughter of Major Higgins, also of the Bengal Army.^[13]
