William White, bachelor of the parish of St Martin in The Fields [1] married Mary Ann Bradley (spinster) of this parish by license on 2 April 1812 in St Marylebone, Westminster, England. They were both able to sign their own names. The witnesses were Rachel Liddy Southwood, Martha Bradley, and Fr[anci]s Bradley Junr[2]
William Louis White, son of William & Mary Ann, was born in about 1814 and baptised on 27 June 1816 in St Martin-In-The-Fields, Middlesex, England. Died in 1818 aged 4 years. [3]
Henry Julian White (1816-1826), son of William & Mary Ann, was born in 1816 and baptised on 27 June 1816 in St Martin-In-The-Fields, Middlesex, England.[4]
George Francis White (1820-), son of William & Mary Ann, was born on 7 November 1817 and baptised on 10 August 1820 in St Martin-In-The-Fields, Middlesex, England.[5]
William Edward White (1824-), son of William & Mary Ann, was born in 1824 and baptised on 6 June 1824 in St Martin-In-The-Fields, Middlesex, England.[6]
William was a chemist who carried out his business on the Haymarket for several decades. From around 1811 he traded with John Henry Hastings as 'Hastings & White' at 17 Haymarket. [7][8] John Henry Hastings died in 1816 and the Hastings & White business initially continued at 17 Haymarket until in 1824 William White removed to 8 Haymarket. Advertising material from 1824 shows that William was apparently in dispute with his business partner's widow who continued to be involved with a business now named 'Hastings & Bryant' which continued to trade at number 17. [9] William continued to trade at number 8 for the remainder of his life and by 1826 had dropped the Hastings name, trading just as 'Mr White's'.

Research Notes
Information from the LWMFHS member:
If I read and understand the 1841 census correctly he was born outside of Middlesex which - together with his very common name - has proven an insurmountable hurdle for me in tracing his parents. Can anyone help?
He was a chemist and from about 1812 had premises on the Haymarket trading as Hastings and White – they must have been successful as they held the appointment of Chemists to their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales. He died on 4 October 1849 at the age of 66 according to his death certificate (which would indicate a birth in 1782/1783) and was buried at St Martin-in-the-Fields on 11 October. I have a copy of his will in which he indicates a desire to be buried in a specific vault alongside his wife and two children who had predeceased him.
He married Mary Ann BRADLEY on 2 April 1812 by licence at St Marylebone. I have a copy of the
marriage licence allegation. She died on 2 June 1824 following the birth of their son William Edward
WHITE. In total they had six children and I have been able to trace details relating to all of them.
WIll Executor James Large
The James Large that was an executor to William's Will was possibly James Large, the husband of his sister in law Martha (Bradley) Large, the couple having been married in 1817.[12]
Will Research
We've looked through dozens and dozens of Wills to see if there was a mention of this William, but unfortunately without knowing where he was born, or who his parents might have been, it's a needle in a haystack. The unusual names of his children might give a clue (Louis, Julian, Julia, Kate), but nothing stumbled upon so far. Whitehouse-2064 15:27, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
Chemist Training and Families
I first researched apprenticeships for William as a chemist. I didn't find anything. I then considered whether he might have followed in his father's, or some other relative's occupation. So I searched for other chemists in London with the surname White; in particular, their Wills. I found two.
William White, who died in 1779. His Will named his brother as Edward White, with two daughters, Elizabeth Weston, and youngest daughter Mary. William himself had a daughter Elizabeth. William described himself as "... of Long Lane in the Parish of Saint Mary Magdalene Bermondsey in the County of Surrey Chemist and Ship Broker".[13] Edward's daughter Elizabeth married John Weston at St Mary, Islington, on 11 February 1775. One of the witnesses was Edward White.[14]
Thomas Edward White, who died in 1835. I transcribed his Will. He left everything to his wife Charlotte Ann.[15] Thomas Edward married Charlotte Ann Pugh at St Leonard, Shoreditch, on 2 Jun 1812. One of the witnesses was Joshua Reynolds Pugh.[16] I believe this Joshua, who gained the Freedom of the City of London,[17] was Charlotte Ann's brother. Joshua had a daughter Julia, who was baptised in 1815.[18]
The fact that the William of this profile named two of his children Julia (n) (Henry Julian and Julia Kate) suggested that this relatively uncommon name was significant. The common elements of White, chemist, and Julia for the second of the two Whites found make Thomas Edward particularly interesting. Further work is ongoing.
