Agathe Gobertina (Whitehead) von Trapp was the first wife of Georg von Trapp, the patriarch of the Famous Trapp Family Sihgers.
Agathe Whitehead was born on 14 June 1891 in Fiume in Austria-Hungary. She was the granddaughter of Robert Whitehead (1823-1905), the wealthy British-born Austrian inventor of the torpedo. Her father was Cavaliere John Whitehead (1854-1902), son of Baron Robert Whitehead, and a partner at the family's Whitehead Torpedo Factory at Fiume, and her mother was Countess Agathe Gobertina (von Breunner-Enkevoirht) Whitehead (1856-1945)
Agathe Whitehead was schooled by tutors and learned to speak English, Italian, and German fluently. In 1914 she married naval Lieutenant Georg von Trapp. They had seven children. After the war the family relocated to Klosterneuburg, near Vienna, Austria.
Agathe von Trapp caught scarlet fever in January 1922 and never fully recovered; she died on September 3, 1922 in Klosterneuburg.[1][2]
Several years later Georg von Trapp remarried and the family formed a musical group. They became famous as the von Trapp family singers, and toured extensively between the two world wars, including the United States and Scandinavia, returning to the USA prior to its entry in WWII. A story of the von Trapp children and their step-mother is told in the largely fictional musical movie The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein.[3]
