Elijah was born on November 26, 1798 in Westborough, Massachusetts. His parents were Elijah Whitney and Mindwell Hardy.[1]
Elijah studied mathematics under Dr. John Golding and he attended over seventy lectures given by Professor Silliman at Yale. He then entered Union College in New York and attended Dr. Eliphalet Nott's courses.
Upon graduating, he acquired a teaching position at the Spencertown Academy and then a year later at a academy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.[2]
He was married twice.
Graduated from Union College in New York in the Class of 1828. Acquired a degree in Medicine from Syracuse Medical College c.1852.
Set up a general practice in New York City.
Chronic Diseases became his specialty.
One of the first users of electricity in the practice of medicine.
He authored medical articles on Yellow Fever and Cholera.
First president of the New York School of Medicine.
He was a co-founder of the Unnion Tabernacle Church in New York City.
Dr. Elijah Whitney passed away at the age of ninety-three on April 5, 1892 in Manhattan, New York.[3]
