Marcus was born in 1812 to Paul Whitney and Lucinda (Marsh) Whitney. He was a good wrestler when he was young. Some things he did at various times in his life were be a farm hand, be a stage driver, open a general store, buy and sell horses, do farming, and be a farrier and veterinary surgeon. He passed away in 1887 from paralysis.
